Rehabilitation of animals after orthopedic diseases
Only part of the success depends on the treatment performed by the veterinarian. Even in the case of perfect limb correction by surgery and proper bone growth, rehabilitation is required to restore function. It is a common practice in human medicine, but in veterinary medicine, rehabilitation is a relatively new area that is becoming increasingly popular.
Rehabilitation methods
After orthopedic diseases, animals are treated with various methods of physiotherapy, kinesitherapy, manual therapy, dosed loads on different muscle groups, massage, swimming in the pool. The goal of rehabilitation is to restore mobility. Mobilization is divided into 2 types:
- Passive - for animals that can not perform movements on their own. The task of the rehabilitologist is to develop the joints and muscles manually, to help the patient to move.
- Active - with four-legged pets engaged in treadmills, fitness balls, balancing pillows.
Physiotherapy procedures can be done on the day of surgery. It is better to start rehabilitation as early as possible - the quality of life of the pet will depend on it.
Features of the rehabilitation process
Dogs and cats are the most capricious patients imagined by a rehabilitation veterinarian. It is difficult to force an animal to perform certain exercises, but it is possible to encourage them with delicacies, games, performing tricks and training.
The presence of the owner during the rehabilitation procedures is desirable, as some of the methods can be memorized and repeated at home. It may take several weeks to several months for the musculoskeletal system to fully recover. The timing and quality of the recovery process of the animal after treatment depends on the interest and responsibility of its owner.
Rehabilitation involves the veterinarian's control over the patient's progress and movements. When improvement is observed during the usual physical exercises, it is necessary to add others - to adjust the rehabilitation process, in any case not neglecting it.
