Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
The main advantages of MRI in veterinary medicine are:
- High informativeness and accuracy. The study makes it possible to obtain a complete amount of highly accurate data on the patient’s condition and has diagnostic value up to 100%.
- High soft contrast. Thanks to an excellent contrast solution, this kind of diagnostics allows to detect any, even the smallest, changes in tissues and organs.
- Non-invasive and harmless. MRI does not involve the introduction of radioactive substances or the use of ionizing radiation, nor does it affect the integrity of tissues.
With MRI for animals we can investigate the following organs and systems of the organism:
- All spinal regions. Diagnosis of inflammation and changes in the intravertebrae, vertebrae, ligaments and joints.
- Central nervous system. Studies of the brain and spinal cord, cavities and vessels. The contrasting agent clearly displays pathological changes and neoplasms of various kinds, abnormalities of structure, edema, haemorrhage and areas of compression. MRI of the brain and spinal cord of animals is particularly relevant in veterinary oncology when it is necessary to determine the presence and prevalence of the tumor process.
- Diseases of the abdominal and thoracic organs. It also allows the examination of any soft structures and organs.
- Endocrine system. Pathologies and changes in pituitary gland, hypothalamus, adrenal glands, thyroid and pancreas.
- CNS research. MRI of the brain and spinal cord is conducted as part of central nervous system diagnostics. Research with high precision allows the detection of neoplasms and tumours in the early stages, the estimation of the incidence of the tumor process, the detection of hemorrhages, edema and pockets of compression and other anomalies.
- The study of the musculoskeletal apparatus. This method of non-invasive diagnosis is often used for the examination of the musculoskeletal apparatus. Conducting an MRI of the spine of the dog is relevant in case of suspicion of inflammation or any pathological changes in the vertebrae and intravertebral discs. A CAT scan examines the condition of ligaments and joints, muscles and tendons, and diagnoses degenerative changes, injuries, inflammations and tumors.
- Other studies. The scope of MR tomography is much broader. It examines abdominal organs, heart and lungs, endocrine organs, kidneys. This method opens up new diagnostic possibilities in gynaecology, urology and other veterinary directions, allowing to visualize any soft structures and organs.
Radiography
The X-rays show the organs of the chest and abdomen. The apparatus is also used for detecting damage and pathologies of the locomotor apparatus. The X-rays at the vet reveal the number of fetuses at a late stage of the pet’s pregnancy.
Veterinary X-rays are required in the following cases:
- injuries of any nature
- for neurological patients
- oncology patients
- in the preliminary diagnosis of orthopedic problems
- with a foreign body
- If there are problems in cardiology
- respiratory disorders
- problems with the urinary system
- on the advice of a veterinarian.
Our vet clinic in Kiev is equipped with a modern surgical X-ray machine with multi-positioned C-arc. It has four modes:
- Continuous
- Pulsatile
- One x-ray scan
- Radiography
The device allows our veterinarians to conduct X-rays to detect damage and pathologies of the locomotor apparatus. We use it actively in the preparation of surgical interventions, which relate to traumatology, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, etc.
The device accurately visualizes the organs of the chest and abdomen, as well as the number of fetuses at the late gestation of the petomica. The speed of radiation dosing is controlled in two ways: manually, with the possibility of blocking, and automatically. The results of the X-ray are printed on a photoprinter.
