First aid for a pet with diarrhea
Does your cat or dog have diarrhea? This phenomenon can be triggered by problems in the intestines, such as poisoning, so try to remember that your pet ate on the eve of diarrhea. In addition, it may be a neoplasm, as well as an infectious (caused by a bacterium or virus) or invasive (single-celled organisms or helminths) process.
Medicines for liquid feces
With the normal general well-being of the pet, the absence of vomiting and the presence of appetite, it is necessary to give sorbents. The drug "Smect" should be given with water twice a day:
- Kittens and puppies - ¼ bag.
- Cats and dogs of small breed - ½ bag.
- Dogs of large breed - 1 sachet.
Enterosgel should also be given with water twice a day in the following dosage:
- Kittens and puppies - ½ tsp.
- Cats and dogs of small breed - 1 tsp.
- Dogs of large breed - 1-1.5 tbsp. l.
You can also give "Polysorb" and activated carbon. During defecation, a lot of fluid is excreted from the body of the animal, so we recommend a little, but often drink it with water. The condition should stabilize within 1-2 days. If this does not happen, be sure to consult a veterinarian.
What medications should NOT be given to a pet with diarrhea?
Do not give "Enterofuril", "Nifuroxazid", "Phthalazole" and their analogues without a doctor's prescription. Diarrhea is not always caused by bacteria, and only examination will help to establish this cause. Treatment with Loperamide and Imodium is dangerous if not prescribed by a veterinarian. The effectiveness of these drugs is due to reduced intestinal motility. This means that if a pet is poisoned, the toxins will remain in the body. To some extent, anthelmintics are toxic, so they should not be given immediately.
If, in addition to diarrhea, the animal feels unwell and vomits, contact the Animal Clinic immediately. Our veterinary clinic in Kyiv and Borovaya collects the anamnesis and examines the patient, makes a preliminary diagnosis, prescribes appropriate treatment, as well as additional research: analysis of parasite feces, ultrasound, general and biochemical blood tests. If infection is suspected, PCR and ELISA tests are required. We will find out in a short time what is wrong with the health of your pet and competently take the necessary measures to eliminate the cause of diarrhea.
