Ultrasonography of the thyroid gland

A high-frequency linear transducer is used to perform an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland. It allows visualizing calcifications and formation of new gland vessels, as well as diagnosing various pathologies, the most common of which are cysts, inflammation and neoplasia.

Indications for thyroid ultrasonography

An animal is prescribed an ultrasonography of the thyroid gland if the following symptoms are present:

  • Thyroid dysfunction, as evidenced by characteristic blood test results.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Weight loss with normal appetite.
  • Decreased appetite in the absence of gastrointestinal diseases.
  • Sudden weight gain.
  • Increased thirst.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Apathy and inactivity.
  • Hyperactivity and aggressiveness.
  • Injuries in the neck area.
  • Impaired concentration of attention.
  • Swelling in the neck area.

No prior starvation diet is required. In the clinic, the hair is shaved off the front surface of the animal's neck with a clipper. For aggressive pets, the procedure is performed under sedation. The patient is placed on his side or on his back, and his head is gently tilted back. An acoustic gel is applied to the area under examination. Then the veterinarian points the transducer to visualize the state of the thyroid gland.
