Ultrasound of the heart (echocardiography)
It is used to diagnose diseases of the cardiovascular system, as well as to check for blood clots, heart defects, and cholesterol plaques. Echocardiography or ultrasound of the heart is a safe non-invasive examination that allows the veterinarian to accurately assess the condition of the heart muscle. Professionals of our veterinary clinic in Kyiv use a special sensor of the Z.ONE ultrasound machine from ZONARE, which allows you to quickly get accurate results.
Which animals should have echocardiography?
Cardiac ultrasound is a mandatory diagnostic procedure for some pets. The fact is that certain breeds of pets are prone to heart disease:
- Dilated cardiomyopathy is more common in large and giant dogs than in others. We are talking about boxers, St. Bernards, Dobermans, Great Danes, Irish Setters, etc.
- Abnormalities in the functioning of the heart valves often affect small and medium-sized dogs: cocker spaniels, dachshunds, Pomeranian spitzes, springer spaniels, Yorkshire terriers.
- Cardiovascular insufficiency is typical for brachycephalic breeds: Pekingese, pugs, as well as English and French bulldogs.
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is not uncommon in cats of such breeds as British, Persian, Sphynx, and Maine Coon.
Importance of echocardiography
Cardiac ultrasound plays an important role when surgical intervention is necessary. Heart pathologies develop slowly, sometimes without visible symptoms. Echocardiography in combination with advanced laboratory testing allows you to identify a hidden heart disease, thereby preventing possible complications during surgery and even preventing the death of the patient.
Thanks to cardiac ultrasound, our veterinarians evaluate a large number of indicators of heart function and hemodynamics, on the basis of which they make predictions about the course of the disease. Only an ultrasound of the heart can correctly diagnose and prescribe the correct treatment.
