Pregnancy in a beloved dog is one of the most important periods for a professional breeder. It requires responsible care, as the quality of maintenance affects not only the mother’s well-being but also the health of future puppies. In this article, our network of veterinary centers, Animal Clinic, offers a week-by-week guide to dog pregnancy. Understanding each stage will help you know what to expect and how to prepare.

Careful Monitoring for a Healthy Pregnancy

Breeders who are just starting often wonder how long pregnancy lasts in dogs. A female dog is usually pregnant for 58–68 days. Each stage has specific characteristics related to the mother’s body and the development of the puppies:

  • Week 1. From day 1 to day 7, the eggs are fertilized and begin moving toward the uterus. At this stage, the dog’s behavior and overall condition usually remain unchanged.
  • Week 2. Between days 8 and 14, the embryos reach the uterus and attach to its walls. During this time, it is important to avoid excessive physical activity and stressful situations.
  • Week 3. Days 15–21 mark the beginning of internal organ development in the embryos. Some females may show the first signs of pregnancy, such as mild weakness, reduced appetite, vomiting, or slight toxicosis.
  • Week 4. From day 22 to day 28, the embryos develop rapidly. At this stage, our veterinarians in Kyiv and the Kyiv region can confirm pregnancy using ultrasound. Slightly enlarged and pinker nipples may also become a visible sign of pregnancy.
  • Week 5. During days 29–35, the belly becomes noticeably rounder. The features of the future puppies begin to form.
  • Week 6. From day 36 to day 42, the puppies increase in size quickly. The female may become calmer, sleep more, and move more carefully. The abdomen becomes clearly visible.
  • Week 7. Days 43–49 — the fully formed puppies continue gaining weight. By gently touching the dog’s belly, you may be able to feel them moving. The mother may begin searching for a place to give birth.
  • Week 8. From day 50 to day 56, the body naturally prepares for labor: colostrum may appear, and the dog may either become calmer or, on the contrary, start nesting, digging, and becoming restless.
  • Week 9. During days 57–68, the female actively prepares her “nest” and may refuse food. One or two days before labor, her body temperature may drop below normal.

Dog pregnancy is a natural process, but it requires maximum attention from the owner. Careful monitoring, love, and proper support are essential for both the mother and her future puppies.

How to Create Proper Conditions for a Pregnant Dog

Caring for a pregnant dog should be thoughtful and comprehensive. Around weeks 4–5, the owner should gradually adjust the diet by increasing protein and nutrient content. Feeding can be changed to three smaller meals per day. Any dietary changes or vitamin supplements should be approved by a veterinary reproduction specialist, as an excess of certain nutrients may be harmful rather than beneficial.

The best type of activity for a pregnant dog is light walking—no jumping, running, or intense play. Avoid overheating and exhaustion. In later stages, прогулки should become slower and calmer.

Help your dog prepare a comfortable place for labor. It should be warm, quiet, and free from drafts. A large box with soft bedding is often the ideal solution.
