Shedding Season in Cats and Dogs: How to Support Their Body
Shedding is a natural process in which dogs and cats renew their coat. The most intense shedding occurs in autumn and spring. As the weather cools, the coat becomes thicker to help maintain body heat. Shorter daylight hours also signal the body to prepare for winter.
However, some pets shed excessively, which can become a real challenge for owners and a reason for concern. In this article, Animal Clinic specialists explain what to do during shedding season and how to tell normal shedding from pathological hair loss.
Which Supplements Support a Healthy Coat
If a pet’s diet is low quality or unbalanced, the body doesn’t receive enough nutrients needed to build a healthy, shiny coat.
To properly produce skin collagen and hair keratin, additional amino acids and biotin may be necessary. If your pet’s daily diet lacks these components, supplements containing them might help.
Do not give your pet vitamins on your own — always consult a veterinarian first.
When Shedding Becomes Pathological
Certain breeds are known for shedding more intensely. Among long-haired dogs, this includes Samoyeds, Huskies, Labradors, Akitas, Collies, and Saint Bernards.
Among short-haired breeds, Pugs and Beagles shed the most.
Cats that typically shed heavily include British Shorthairs, Scottish breeds, Persians, and Maine Coons.
You can help your pet by brushing them regularly, especially during peak shedding periods.
Shedding usually decreases at the beginning of winter. If this does not happen and hair loss is accompanied by skin changes, your pet may be dealing with a dermatological condition. Possible signs include:
- Skin damage — wounds, scratches, flaking
- Purulent (pus-filled) lesions
- Bald patches caused by endocrine disorders, excessive licking, or scratching due to atopic dermatitis, ectoparasites, or allergies
- Excessively oily coat
It is impossible to determine on your own whether shedding is normal or if your pet requires treatment. A qualified veterinary dermatologist at Animal Clinic can help.
During an appointment in Kyiv or the Kyiv region, the specialist will take a detailed history and recommend diagnostic tests such as flea detection, ringworm testing, or skin scraping.
Remember: a pet’s coat is an important indicator of their overall health.
