Many people get rats when they hear about their survivability. But these are quite fragile animals that need constant supervision, care and attention of the owner. Even a small wound can seriously impair a pet's health. Read this article to avoid possible injuries, and if you can not avoid the problem - to provide first aid.

Bone fractures in rats

Among the injuries in rats, the most common are tail fractures. This can happen if you pinch the tail of the cage door or accidentally step on it. If you suspect that the tail is broken, take your pet for an examination at the Animal Clinic. Did you see the pet fall, get stuck in the cage, or unintentionally hurt him? Place the rat on a flat surface:

  • If he pulls his hind legs, the spine is broken. Carefully move the pet into a small box and cover with cotton wool.
  • If you do not step on one paw, the limb may be broken.

After giving the rodent complete rest, take it to the vet. The exact type of injury will be determined by X-ray or CT.

Damage to the skin

The skin of ornamental rats is very sensitive. It can be injured even by careless movement. Found a wound on the tail? Treat it with a weak solution of manganese. Due to their curiosity, rats often get scratches and even burns.

Abrasions need to be disinfected. In case of burns, hold the affected area under cold running water, and then apply a sterile bandage. Never use ointment. If a large area of skin is damaged, replace the wooden mat with a napkin to prevent infection.

The rat may fall asleep, so make sure there are no sharp objects in the cage. If several rodents are kept in the same cage, make sure they do not injure each other.
