Treatment of dog infertility
Are you planning to breed dogs that have breeding value, but the female does not become pregnant? Infertility can be caused by many factors. In order to avoid wasting time and treat the animal effectively, you must first establish a diagnosis.
Why is a female dog infertile?
Infertility in dogs is quite common. It can occur due to physiological, anatomical, and external factors, such as inadequate housing conditions. Common causes of infertility include:
- Ovulation disorders. They are associated with ovarian pathologies, namely with a failure in the development of the egg. A sign of the phenomenon is irregular or latent flow. Cystic ovarian transformation blocks the release of eggs and is manifested by nymphomania and prolonged periods. Ovulation may not occur at all, for example, due to the use of hormonal drugs. Their long-term effect on the female's body disrupts the functions of the thyroid gland and adrenal glands, which provokes infertility.
- Fertilization abnormalities. Both the wrong time for mating and an infection in the genitourinary system can play a role here.
- Abnormalities of embryo implantation and pregnancy. They may be associated with cystic endometrial hyperplasia or uterine infection. In the first days of life, the embryo is most vulnerable. Sometimes, especially in the first half of pregnancy, the fetus can die due to the administration of medications to the female.
Understanding the cause of infertility makes it possible to prescribe the right treatment so that the mating is successful and healthy offspring are born.
Diagnostics to determine the cause of infertility
To find the cause of female infertility, it is better to first check the state of the male's reproductive system. After ruling out a sexual infection and making sure that the sperm are active by performing a spermogram, you can proceed to examine the female's body. First, the veterinarian will take anamnesis about previous estrus, mating, and treatment. Then the following diagnostic measures will be required:
- Ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries during estrus. It allows you to see changes in the uterine mucosa, ovarian cysts and signs of inflammation.
- Vaginal smear during estrus. It helps in assessing the inflammatory process and plays an important role in treatment, as it allows you to start additional therapy in time.
- General hormonal test. It is necessary to check for imbalances in the endocrine or reproductive system.
- The analysis of peripheral blood plasma for progesterone levels gives an idea of the presence or absence of ovulation after the estrus.
- Examination of the kidneys (contribute to the death of hormones) and liver (involved in the metabolism of sex hormone steroids).
- Clinical blood test (leukoformula) and serological examination for brucellosis and herpesvirus. The results allow us to assess the dog's health and detect infections.
Sometimes tests are also required during pregnancy, as the embryo can die before attachment to the uterus, immediately afterwards, and even at a late stage of gestation. The level of progesterone, a hormone produced by the ovaries to maintain pregnancy, is examined. According to the indicators, it is possible to understand that there is a risk of fetal death when it is still possible to help the fetus.
Ultrasound also allows you to take the necessary measures to preserve the pregnancy. It makes it possible to check the viability of the fetus. It is a comprehensive diagnosis that allows you to find the cause of the problem and prescribe the right treatment.
Treatment of infertility in dogs at Animal Clinic
The treatment method directly depends on the pathology that prevents a female dog from becoming pregnant or bearing offspring. For example, an infection in the cervix is eliminated by 10-14 days of antibiotics that are not toxic to embryos. Additionally, the vagina is washed.
If the genitals are injured, surgical intervention is required. If the estrus is normal, but the corpus luteum does not develop or disappears early, hormones will be needed to regulate the cycle. This is an inpatient treatment, because the patient's condition must be monitored by a veterinarian: monitor temperature and discharge, perform uterine examinations and X-rays.
Animal Clinic specialists have extensive knowledge and experience in the field of reproductive veterinary medicine. They treat each patient individually and study the female's health in depth to effectively find and eliminate the problem.
