Ultrasonography of head and neck vessels
Doppler ultrasonography is a non-invasive and absolutely safe ultrasound examination that allows to assess blood flow in the arteries and veins that supply blood to the brain. This diagnostic method is based on the Doppler effect. Moving through blood vessels, red blood cells differ in the frequency of sound waves. During the ultrasound examination, this difference is recorded by the device and presented as a graphic image of the examined area of the circulatory system.
Dopplerography capabilities
Thanks to Doppler ultrasound, Animal Clinic veterinarians perform accurate diagnostics of the animal's vascular system:
- Determine the speed and direction of blood flow in superficial and deep vessels.
- Assess the resistance of the vessel walls to blood flow.
- Determine the diameter of the vessels.
- Blood clots and other obstacles that impair blood flow are detected.
Spectral Doppler allows to assess the state of blood flow in large vessels. The data obtained are drawn up in a graph of blood flow rate over time. Energy Dopplerography makes it possible to assess blood flow in all vessels, including capillaries of the head and neck, giving specialists information about the volume of blood supply.
There are no contraindications for this type of ultrasound examination. Doppler ultrasonography is prescribed for animals that have suffered a traumatic brain injury, pets with pathologies of the cervical spine, and if there is a suspicion of cerebral circulation disorders. Remember: detecting the disease in your pet at the initial stage contributes to the effectiveness of treatment.
