Ultrasound of the urinary system

To examine the retroperitoneal space, i.e. the urinary system, our veterinary clinic in Kyiv uses the Z.ONE ultrasound machine with zone scanning technology. This equipment allows you to quickly and safely visualize the condition of the bladder, ureter and kidneys.

Ultrasound examination of the bladder

The bladder is susceptible to various ailments, the most common of which are inflammation of the bladder (cystitis), urolithiasis, and various neoplasms (cysts, polyps, tumors). Bladder injuries can also occur, the extent of the consequences of which can also be assessed using ultrasound.

It is difficult to visualize an empty bladder because the thickness of the walls of this organ depends on its stretching. That is why the animal's bladder should be moderately full during the ultrasound examination. We also recommend an 8-12-hour fasting diet for large breed dogs. If you have a small breed dog or cat, you can limit yourself to 6 hours of fasting your pet. This test method is prescribed for:

  • ЗChanges in the smell and color of urine, the presence of sediment or blood in it.
  • Painful and/or frequent urination.
  • Urinary incontinence.

Immediately before the ultrasound, our specialist will gently remove the hair in the area to be scanned. A high-quality image of the bladder will be obtained when your pet is lying on its back.

Possibilities of kidney ultrasonography

Ultrasound examination of the kidneys allows to determine the position of the organs, detect abnormalities of location and development, stones, increase in kidney size and identify its causes, diagnose pyelonephritis and glomerulonephritis, nephrosclerosis, kidney infarction.

Ultrasonography of ureters

Ultrasound of the ureters gives Animal Clinic veterinarians the opportunity to diagnose:

  • Blockage of the ureters by a kidney stone or neoplasm.
  • Abnormal development of the ureter.
  • Cystic dilatation of the distal ureter.
  • Hydroureteronephrosis.
  • Abnormal narrowing or dilation of the ureter.

The procedure is performed in conjunction with an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys.
